Anecdote to fear

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

The antidote to fear is not the absence of risk — it is the presence of purpose. When you know why you’re moving forward, the fear of what might happen along the way loses some of its power over you.

Fear is most paralyzing in a vacuum. When we don’t have a clear direction or compelling reason, fear fills the space with worst-case scenarios and convinces us that staying still is the safest option. And in the absence of anything bigger to move toward, staying still feels like it might be right.

But when purpose is present — a why that genuinely matters to you — fear has to compete with something. And purpose, when it’s strong enough, wins. The parent who would never jump from a bridge will climb out a window to save their child. The person who feared public speaking for decades stands up in front of thousands when the cause is important enough. Fear doesn’t disappear. It just gets outweighed.

Find your purpose. Not a generic version — a specific, personal, felt sense of why you’re here and what you’re here to do. What breaks your heart? What makes you come alive? What would you regret not having contributed to? The answers point toward a purpose powerful enough to carry you through the fears.

Then there is action. Fear lives most comfortably in inaction. The moment you take even a small step toward the thing you’re afraid of, fear begins to diminish. Purpose and action, together, are the antidote to fear. Find them and keep moving.
