Being Lost

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

There is a version of being lost that feels like failure. You looked at the map, you followed the plan, you did everything right — and somehow you still ended up somewhere you didn’t intend to go. The job isn’t what you thought it would be. The relationship isn’t working the way you hoped. The version of yourself you imagined becoming hasn’t quite arrived.

But here is what most people don’t realize about being lost: it is almost always a necessary part of the journey. The detour that feels like a disaster is often the road that leads to the most important destination. Being lost forces you to slow down, look around, and pay attention in a way that a smooth, straight road never would.

This Life’s Road Sign speaks to the person who is somewhere in between — not where they were, not yet where they’re going. That place feels uncomfortable because it is. But discomfort is not the same as danger. Being lost is not the same as being stuck.

When you are lost, the worst thing you can do is pretend you know where you are. The best thing you can do is admit it — to yourself and to someone who can help. Ask for directions. Try a different route. Stop and think about what you actually want, not what you thought you wanted.

Every person who ever arrived somewhere meaningful was lost at some point along the way. Being lost is not the end of your story. It might just be the beginning of the best chapter.
