Ask Seek Knock

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Ask. Seek. Knock. Three words from one of the most enduring teachings in human history — and three verbs that have everything to do with how you approach the road of life.

Each word involves active participation. Not passive hoping, not idle wishing, not waiting for things to materialize on their own. Ask — make your need known, be specific, have the courage to articulate what you’re looking for. Seek — go looking, investigate, pursue the thing with real effort and real attention. Knock — show up at the door, even when you don’t know what’s on the other side, even when you’re not sure it will open.

There is a promise attached to these verbs. The one who asks receives. The one who seeks finds. To the one who knocks, the door is opened. This is not a guarantee that life will be easy or that every desire will be fulfilled in the way you imagined. It’s a guarantee that participation changes outcomes. That the posture of seeking is fundamentally different from the posture of waiting.

Many people live their entire lives on the far side of doors that would have opened if they’d knocked. They don’t ask because they’re afraid of being told no. They don’t seek because they’re not sure what they’re looking for. They don’t knock because they assume the door is locked.

The answers you need are available. The doors you need to walk through exist. But they require you to move toward them.

Ask. Seek. Knock. The road opens for those who do.

Questions are the Answer

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Questions are the answer. Not the answer you expected, perhaps — but the one that actually leads somewhere. The question that won’t leave you alone is the road sign pointing toward your next destination.

We live in a world that rewards those who have answers, but the most important discoveries — in science, in business, in personal growth — began with someone asking a question that no one had taken seriously before. The question came first. The answer followed, often years later, through the sustained effort of a curious mind that refused to settle.

In your own life, the questions you carry are telling you something. What keeps coming back to you? What do you find yourself wondering about at 2am? What feels unresolved, unexplored, important in a way you can’t quite articulate? Those questions are not noise. They are signal. They are the compass points of a life that is uniquely yours to live.

Some of the most transformative questions are deceptively simple. What do I actually value? What am I afraid of, really? Who do I want to become? What would I regret not having tried? If I had one year left, how would I spend it differently?

The questions don’t come with easy answers, and that’s exactly the point. They require you to sit with uncertainty, to explore, to consider perspectives you might have previously dismissed. They force you to think rather than simply react. And in the process, they shape you — more than the answers ever could. Ask better questions. The questions are the answer.

NO EXCUSES

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

No excuses. This is the standard that separates those who achieve from those who don’t — not talent, not luck, not resources, but the refusal to let reasons become reasons not to try.

Excuses are seductive because they are almost always partially true. I don’t have enough time. I don’t have enough money. I didn’t have the right opportunities growing up. The circumstances aren’t right. These things may contain genuine truth — and still be excuses. Because the question is never whether the obstacles exist. They always do. The question is what you choose to do in the presence of them.

Every person who has ever done something meaningful did it in the presence of legitimate obstacles. They didn’t have a perfect path. They didn’t have all the time or money or support they needed. What they had was the decision to move forward anyway — to treat their circumstances as the starting point rather than the stopping point.

No excuses doesn’t mean no acknowledgment of difficulty. It means refusing to let difficulty be your final answer. It means looking at the obstacle and asking not why this stops me but how I get through this. It means being honest about what is within your control and choosing to maximize it.

This Life’s Road Sign is not a judgment — it’s a challenge. The next time you find yourself building a case for why something isn’t possible for you, stop and ask: Is this genuinely impossible, or is this an excuse I’m choosing to believe? The honest answer might surprise you.

Stop!

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Stop. Just for a moment — stop. We move through life at a pace that rarely allows for the kind of pause that changes everything. We are busy, connected, scheduled, and rushing from one thing to the next. And in all that motion, we miss things. We miss the moment right in front of us. We miss the signals our own body is sending. We miss the people who are right beside us, waiting for us to slow down enough to see them.

Stopping is not quitting. It is not laziness. It is one of the most courageous things a person can do in a world that glorifies perpetual motion. To stop is to say: I will not be controlled by the urgent at the expense of the important. I will not spend my whole life rushing toward destinations without actually living the road.

When you stop, you create space to breathe. Space to think more clearly than you can when your brain is in constant overdrive. Space to hear the quieter voice inside you that has wisdom to offer if you’ll only get still enough to receive it.

Stop and notice what’s beautiful. Stop and check in with the people you love. Stop and ask yourself if the direction you’re heading is actually where you want to go. Stop and acknowledge what you’ve already accomplished before sprinting toward the next thing.

The world will not fall apart if you pause. In fact, after a genuine stop, everything that comes next often goes better — because you were fully present for it. Stop. Breathe. Then go on — more intentionally than before.

Fall in love again

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Fall in love again. With the person you’re with, with the work you do, with the life you’re living — with yourself. Love has a way of dimming under the ordinary weight of days, and rekindling it is one of the most important things you can choose to do.

Relationships, over time, can shift from passionate connection to comfortable coexistence. The qualities that once captivated you become so familiar they fade into the background. The effort that characterized the early days gets quietly replaced with assumption — that the other person knows how you feel, that the connection will maintain itself.

It is a practice. Falling in love again means choosing to see the person across from you with fresh eyes. It means choosing curiosity over familiarity. What are they thinking about right now? What has changed in them that you haven’t noticed because you stopped looking? What do you love about them that you’ve stopped saying out loud?

Fall in love again with your own life by doing the things that made you feel alive. By pursuing the interests you shelved when life got busy. By spending time with the people who bring out the best version of you. By treating yourself with the care and attention you extend to others but often withhold from yourself.

Fall in love with your work by finding what still matters in it, or by having the honest conversation with yourself about whether it’s time for something new.

Love — in all its forms — is renewable. It is not lost. It is waiting to be chosen again. Choose it today.

Find Yourself

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Find yourself. Not the version of you that was designed to please others, perform for approval, or fit neatly into the expectations of the people around you — the actual you. The one with the strange interests, the unpopular opinions, the dreams that don’t quite fit the mold.

Most of us spend a significant portion of our early lives building a self in response to our environment — doing what earns love, avoiding what earns criticism, shaping ourselves to the expectations of parents, peers, teachers, and culture. This is how we survive. It is also, over time, how we lose ourselves — in layers of adaptation that make it hard to know where the performance ends and the person begins.

Finding yourself is not a single moment of revelation. It is a process of honest self-inquiry and experiential exploration. You find yourself by trying things — new creative pursuits, new environments, new relationships — and paying attention to what feels alive versus what feels like going through the motions. You find yourself by noticing what you consistently value when no one is watching, what you would do if approval weren’t a factor.

You find yourself by learning to trust your own perceptions and instincts, even when they diverge from what others believe about you.

The road to yourself may take some unexpected turns. You may discover that some of what you thought was you was actually borrowed from someone else — and some of what you denied was actually exactly you. Let the discovery surprise you. Find yourself. Then be that person, as fully as possible, for the rest of your life.

Work in the home

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

The work done inside a home is some of the most important work in the world — and some of the least recognized. The parent who gets up before the rest of the house to prepare, who runs the logistics of an entire family’s life, who shows up every single day without a performance review, a raise, or a standing ovation.

We live in a culture that measures contribution by income. If it doesn’t generate a paycheck, it’s often treated as less valuable — even by the people doing it. But consider what it would cost to replace the work of a devoted homemaker: childcare, cooking, cleaning, tutoring, scheduling, emotional support, household management. The number is staggering.

This Life’s Road Sign honors the work in the home. Whether you’re a parent who has chosen to stay home, a partner who carries more than your share of the domestic load, or someone who manages a household in addition to an outside career — your work matters. It matters enormously.

Children raised in a home where someone was genuinely present — where meals were made with love, where someone showed up at the school play, where there was stability and warmth — carry that foundation with them forever. You may never get a thank you. The world may never see what you do. But the people you’re doing it for will feel it every day of their lives.

The work in the home is a vocation. Treat it with the dignity it deserves.

Plan and Prepare

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Plan and prepare — because when the moment arrives, there won’t be time to start. The readiness you build in the quiet seasons is what carries you through the demanding ones.

There is a saying in many fields: the more you sweat in practice, the less you bleed in battle. Athletes drill the same plays thousands of times so that when the game is on the line, the body moves without having to think. Surgeons simulate procedures before performing them on patients. Pilots train in flight simulators until emergency responses become instinct. This is not overkill — it is wisdom.

Preparation is not the same as overthinking. Overthinking delays action; preparation enables it. Preparation means doing the work now so that when opportunity or crisis appears, you’re not scrambling — you’re ready to move.

Planning without action is just dreaming. But action without planning is often wasted energy — the wrong thing done efficiently, or the right thing done in the wrong sequence. The plan doesn’t need to be perfect. It needs to be honest, clear enough to follow, and flexible enough to revise when the situation demands it.

What are you preparing for? What season is coming — personally, professionally, in your health or your finances — that deserves your attention now, before it arrives? The time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining, not when the rain is coming through.

Plan. Prepare. Then act with the confidence that comes from having done both. The road is navigable when you’ve done the work before you stepped onto it.

TODAY I WILL DO WHAT OTHER WON’T

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Today I will do what others won’t — so that tomorrow I can do what others can’t. That sentence alone contains the entire blueprint for an exceptional life.

Most people choose comfort. They hit snooze. They scroll instead of study. They say they’ll start Monday and then find another reason to delay. This is human nature. Our brains are wired for short-term ease. But exceptional outcomes don’t come from doing what’s easy. They come from doing what’s necessary even when it’s hard.

Think about every person you admire — every athlete, entrepreneur, artist, or leader whose life inspires you. What separates them from everyone else? They consistently did the thing others avoided. They trained when they were tired. They practiced when no one was watching. They kept going when quitting would have been completely understandable.

The gap between ordinary and extraordinary is not talent. It is not luck. It is not connections or timing. The gap is the daily willingness to do what others won’t. To wake up and choose discipline over comfort, one day at a time.

Today you have a choice. You can take the easy road — the one most people take. Or you can do the thing that’s hard, the thing that requires sacrifice, the thing that feels uncomfortable right now but builds the life you actually want.

The road less traveled is less traveled for a reason. It’s harder. But at the end of it, there is a version of yourself and a life you could never have reached by taking the easy way out. Today, do what others won’t.

Questions

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Questions are the road signs of a well-lived life. They point you toward what matters, away from what doesn’t, and remind you that you still have somewhere to go.

The quality of your life is largely determined by the quality of the questions you ask yourself. People who ask why does this always happen to me lead very different lives from those who ask what can I learn from this. Not because their circumstances are different, but because the questions they ask direct their attention — and attention shapes experience.

Ask better questions. Instead of why can’t I do this, ask what would it look like if I could. Instead of what’s wrong with me, ask what do I need right now. Instead of why aren’t things working, ask what’s one thing I could adjust.

Questions also build connection. When you approach other people with genuine curiosity — asking about their experiences, their perspectives, their stories — you learn things you never could have imagined. You discover that your assumptions were wrong, that the world is wider than your own experience of it.

The greatest thinkers in history were, above all, excellent questioners. Socrates built an entire method of inquiry around asking and following questions wherever they led. Scientists spend careers pursuing a single question. Children — before we train it out of them — ask why dozens of times a day.

Keep asking. Keep wondering. Keep following the questions you can’t stop thinking about. They are signs pointing you toward exactly where you need to go.

Waiting on a sign

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

You’ve been waiting for a sign. Maybe this is it.

We wait for signs because we want certainty before we act. We want confirmation that the path is right, that the timing is good, that the risk is worth it. And signs can come — in the form of a conversation at the right moment, a book that opens to exactly the right page, an opportunity that appears after a long drought. Signs are real, and paying attention to them is wisdom.

But waiting for a sign can also become a way of avoiding the decision you already know you need to make. You know what the sign would say — you know what you need to do. You’re just hoping for external permission to do what you already feel called toward, because acting without certainty is frightening.

Consider this: action itself often produces the sign you’re waiting for. You take the step and doors open, or close definitively, or redirect you somewhere better. Clarity often comes through doing rather than through waiting.

What are you waiting on a sign about? Is there something you already know in your gut — a change that needs to happen, a conversation that needs to occur, a dream that needs your active investment rather than just your wishful attention?

Sometimes the sign you’re looking for is the persistent feeling inside you that won’t go away. The recurring thought. The quiet knowing that something needs to change. You’ve been waiting on a sign. Consider yourself signposted. Now go.

Tell the truth

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Tell the truth. It sounds simple, but it is one of the most courageous and countercultural acts available to a human being in a world that constantly provides incentives for half-truths, omissions, and comfortable distortions.

We lie for understandable reasons. We want to avoid conflict. We want to protect someone’s feelings. We want to protect our own reputation or position. We tell ourselves that the small untruth doesn’t really matter, that no one will know, that it’s kinder than the alternative. And sometimes, short-term, it is more comfortable.

But dishonesty has a long-term cost that is always more expensive than the short-term discomfort of the truth. Trust, once broken, is very hard to rebuild. The energy spent maintaining a lie — keeping the stories straight, avoiding the topics that might expose it — is exhausting. And the relationship built on falseness is fundamentally hollow, no matter how pleasant the surface appears.

The truth, by contrast, is clean. Even when it’s hard to deliver and hard to receive, it respects the other person enough to give them reality to work with. It gives relationships the honest foundation they need to be genuinely deep. It lets you live without the weight of constructed narratives and the anxiety of being found out.

Tell the truth about yourself — your mistakes, your struggles, your uncertainties. Tell the truth to the people you love, even when it’s uncomfortable. Tell the truth in your work, especially when covering it up would be easier.

The road you build on honesty is longer and harder to start on, but it leads somewhere real. Truth is how you actually get there.

Today is the day!

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Today is the day. Not tomorrow. Not Monday. Not when things are less busy, less complicated, or less scary. Today.

We are remarkably good at finding reasons to wait. The timing isn’t right. We’re not ready yet. We need more information, more preparation, more courage. And so we wait, and the days keep passing, and the thing we want to do or become or build stays perpetually on the horizon — always close, never quite arrived.

Here is what nobody tells you about waiting for the right time: the right time is a myth. There will always be a reason to delay. Life will never be perfectly organized, perfectly calm, or perfectly positioned for the thing you want to begin. The people who take action don’t do it because the conditions were perfect — they do it despite the conditions, and they figure things out as they go.

What have you been putting off? What is the thing that keeps showing up in your mind — the business you want to start, the conversation you need to have, the health goal you keep pushing back, the creative project that’s been waiting years for your attention?

Today is the day to take the first step toward it. Not the whole journey — just the first step. Send the email. Make the appointment. Write the first paragraph. Lace up your shoes and walk out the door. Begin. Every meaningful journey began on a day exactly like today. Ordinary. Uncertain. And someone chose to begin anyway.

Important decisions ahead

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Important decisions are ahead. Some you know about — you’ve been circling them for weeks, weighing options, consulting with trusted people, lying awake at 3am turning them over. Some you don’t know about yet — they’ll arrive with little warning and require you to respond from the character you’ve been building all along.

How do you make good decisions? Not perfect decisions — those aren’t available to anyone. But decisions you can stand behind, that align with who you are and what you value, that you can live with regardless of how the outcome turns out.

First, know your values. The clearer you are about what matters most to you — your non-negotiables, the principles you won’t compromise on — the easier the hard decisions become. Values don’t eliminate difficulty, but they provide a compass when the road is unclear.

Second, gather information without letting it paralyze you. Do your due diligence. Talk to people who know things you don’t. Consider multiple perspectives. But set a deadline. Indefinite information gathering is often a sophisticated form of avoidance.

Third, consult your gut. Intuition is the accumulated wisdom of your past experience, and it often knows things your rational mind hasn’t caught up to yet. If something feels consistently wrong, pay attention to that feeling.

Finally, make the decision and commit to it. Fully. Half-committed decisions tend to produce half-good outcomes. Once you’ve chosen the road, travel it with your whole self. Important decisions are ahead. You have what it takes to make them well.

Will you like what you see?

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Will you like what you see? When you reach the end of this season of your life, when you look back at how you spent your time, your energy, your words — will you be proud of what you find?

This is not a question designed to produce guilt. It’s a compass. It’s the question that, when asked honestly and regularly, keeps you pointed in the direction of the life you actually want to live rather than the one that just happens to you by default.

Most of us have a picture in our minds of the person we want to be. Someone present with the people we love. Someone who works with integrity. Someone who takes care of their health. Someone who keeps their word and lives by their values. The gap between that picture and our daily reality is where most of our quiet dissatisfaction lives.

The encouraging part is that the gap is closeable. Not all at once, and not without effort, but one choice at a time. Every day gives you hundreds of small decisions that either narrow the gap or widen it. The way you respond when you’re stressed. What you choose to prioritize. Whether you do what you said you would do.

Check in with yourself regularly. Not to judge yourself harshly, but to stay honest and course-correct before the drift becomes a canyon. Ask: Am I becoming the person I want to be? Are my daily habits aligned with my deepest values? If I continue on this road, will I like where I end up? The mirror doesn’t lie. Make sure you’ll like what you see.

What you can change

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

There is a simple but transformative division that, once understood, will change the way you experience almost everything: the things you can change, and the things you cannot. The wisdom is in knowing the difference — and having the courage to act on it.

Most human suffering is caused by one of two mistakes. The first is spending energy trying to change things that are not changeable — other people’s choices, past events, the opinions of people who have made up their minds, circumstances that are simply outside our control. The second is treating things that are entirely within our control as if they are fixed — our habits, our responses, our mindset, our effort.

What can you change? Your attitude. Your actions. The way you respond to what happens to you. The habits you build. The words you speak. The effort you give. The people you invest in. The thoughts you choose to entertain. These things are always within your reach, regardless of your circumstances.

What can’t you change? How others behave. What happened in the past. What people think of you. The weather. Uncertainty itself. Pouring energy into these is like pushing against a wall — exhausting and fruitless.

This Life’s Road Sign draws the map clearly. Your lane is what you can control. Stay in it. Work it. Maximize it. And when things happen that you cannot control, practice the discipline of releasing them rather than carrying them.

Focus on what you can change. Let go of the rest. The road gets lighter when you do.

You Create Your Opportunities

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

You create your opportunities. They are not handed out randomly to the lucky or the privileged. They are built — through preparation, persistence, relationship, and an unwillingness to wait for someone else to open a door.

It’s easy to look at someone who seems to have had all the right breaks and attribute their success to luck. And while circumstances do vary, what rarely gets credited is the work that happened before the break arrived. The years of learning. The relationships built with care and genuine interest. The projects taken on for free or at a loss, just to build the skill and the proof. The times they showed up even when no one was watching.

Opportunity follows preparation. When you consistently develop your skills, show up with excellence, and treat people with respect and generosity, opportunities begin to find you — because people notice, and people talk, and the world responds to those who take their work seriously.

Create your opportunities by learning relentlessly. Read widely. Study the people who have done what you want to do. Invest in your own growth even when no one is paying you to do it yet.

Create your opportunities by building relationships. Not networking in a transactional way — genuinely connecting with people, being curious about their lives, offering help without expecting something in return.

Create your opportunities by taking action before you feel ready. Pitch the idea. Enter the competition. Start the project. Ask for the meeting. Most opportunities come to those who were bold enough to reach for something before they had permission. The road ahead is full of possibility. You have to build the on-ramp yourself.

Do it now – don’t wait

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Do it now. Don’t wait. The sign doesn’t say do it when the timing is perfect, do it when you’re ready, do it when the kids are older, do it when the money is there. It says: do it now.

There is an enormous cost to waiting that most people never calculate. Every day you wait to start the business, write the book, repair the relationship, change the habit, pursue the goal — is a day of progress lost. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months, and months into years. And then one day you’re looking back at a decade wondering what happened to the thing you were going to do.

The perfect moment does not exist. The conditions will never be completely right. There will always be a reason to wait just a little longer — and if you follow those reasons, you will wait forever. The people who do things are not the people who waited for the right time. They’re the people who decided that any time they act is the right time.

Urgency is not panic. It’s clarity. It’s the honest recognition that time is finite, that tomorrow is not guaranteed, and that the life you want to live requires action today — imperfect, incomplete, uncertain action that you do anyway because waiting costs too much.

What have you been putting off? What have you been meaning to do, intending to start, planning to pursue? Do it now. Not tomorrow. Not when things settle down. Now. The road is open.

Thinking too much

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

You’re thinking too much. Not about important things that deserve thought, but about the things that have already been decided, the conversations that already happened, the outcomes you cannot control. The mind running laps around problems that action — not more thought — would solve.

Overthinking is the cognitive version of revving an engine in neutral. It sounds like work. It feels busy. But you’re not going anywhere. The same thoughts cycle through, slightly repackaged each time, without producing new information or useful insight. Just more of the same loop, tighter and more exhausting with each pass.

The research on overthinking shows that it is closely associated with anxiety, depression, and poor decision-making. When we replay past events obsessively, we tend to make them worse in our minds than they actually were. When we simulate future scenarios excessively, we tend to catastrophize — generating worst-case images that are vivid but not accurate.

The antidote to overthinking is almost always simpler than we expect. Sometimes it is action — doing the thing instead of thinking about doing the thing. Sometimes it is conversation — talking it out with someone who will give you honest perspective. Sometimes it is physical movement — a walk, a run, anything that breaks the mental loop by changing your physical state. Sometimes it is simply a decision to let the thought go, not because it’s been resolved, but because continuing to hold it isn’t helping.

Not every question needs to be answered before you move. Not every scenario needs to be imagined. Some things resolve themselves when you stop trying to force resolution with thought alone.

Think enough. Then move.

If you stumble, play it off

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

If you stumble, play it off — then get back on your feet and keep going. Falling is not failure. Staying down is.

Everyone stumbles. No exception. The path of life is not smooth, and even the most graceful people you know have had moments where they tripped over their own feet, metaphorically or literally. The difference between people who recover well and people who don’t is less about the stumble itself and more about what they do in the moments right after.

Playing it off doesn’t mean pretending it didn’t happen or denying your imperfections. It means refusing to let a single fall define your trajectory. It means having a sense of humor about your own humanity. It means standing up with enough grace that the stumble becomes a story you tell later rather than a weight you carry forever.

Self-compassion is essential here. The voice inside many of us treats our stumbles with extraordinary harshness — cataloguing the failure, replaying it, making global statements about our worth and capability based on a single bad moment. That voice is not helpful, and it is not truthful. You are not your worst moment any more than you are your best one.

What happened? What can you learn from it? What do you need to do differently next time? These are the useful questions. Not what does this say about who I fundamentally am — that question serves no purpose except to keep you on the ground longer than necessary.

Stumble if you must. Play it off with grace. Then stand up and keep moving. The road doesn’t end where you fell.
