Believe You Can

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Believe you can — and you’re already halfway there. Theodore Roosevelt said it, and more than a century later, it remains one of the most practically useful insights in human achievement. Belief does not guarantee success, but disbelief almost always guarantees failure.

When you believe you can do something, your behavior changes in ways both visible and invisible. You approach challenges as solvable rather than fixed. You persist longer in the face of setbacks. You stay curious and creative rather than shutting down. You notice opportunities and possibilities that a disbelieving mind would simply filter out.

Henry Ford put it another way: whether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right. Our beliefs about our own capabilities function as self-fulfilling prophecies. The student who believes they can improve their grades studies differently. The athlete who believes they can recover from injury approaches rehabilitation differently.

The most important voice you will ever hear is your own inner voice. That voice talks to you all day long, and what it says about you and your potential shapes your reality more profoundly than almost anything else. If that voice consistently says you can’t, it’s time to interrogate those beliefs. Are they actually true? Who told you that? Does it serve you to keep believing it?

You may not be able to do everything. But you are almost certainly capable of more than your current beliefs are allowing. Test that. Push a little further than comfortable. Discover what happens when you believe. Believe you can. Then do the work to prove it.

Expect Good Things

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Expect good things. Not as passive wishful thinking, but as an active orientation toward the world that changes how you move through it, what you notice, and what you ultimately experience.

Our expectations shape our reality in ways that science has confirmed repeatedly. The placebo effect — one of the most well-documented phenomena in medicine — demonstrates that expecting something to work often produces real, measurable change in the body. In psychology, the Pygmalion effect shows that when teachers expect more from their students, those students actually achieve more. Expectation is not neutral — it is causal.

When you expect good things, you look for them — and what you look for, you find. You notice opportunities that a pessimistic mind would overlook. You approach problems with the assumption that they’re solvable. You interact with people as though they’re trustworthy and well-meaning, which often elicits the very behavior you expected.

This isn’t about denying reality or refusing to prepare for challenges. It’s about tilting your baseline toward hope rather than dread. It’s about entering rooms expecting to find something worthwhile. It’s about waking up assuming the day holds something good — even if you don’t know what yet.

People who live this way are not living in delusion. They are simply making the wiser bet. Good things happen. Connections are made. Doors open. Breakthroughs arrive. The person who is oriented toward expecting these things is far more likely to recognize and receive them when they come.

Expect good things today. Then stay awake enough to receive them.

Fall in love again

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Fall in love again. With the person you’re with, with the work you do, with the life you’re living — with yourself. Love has a way of dimming under the ordinary weight of days, and rekindling it is one of the most important things you can choose to do.

Relationships, over time, can shift from passionate connection to comfortable coexistence. The qualities that once captivated you become so familiar they fade into the background. The effort that characterized the early days gets quietly replaced with assumption — that the other person knows how you feel, that the connection will maintain itself.

It is a practice. Falling in love again means choosing to see the person across from you with fresh eyes. It means choosing curiosity over familiarity. What are they thinking about right now? What has changed in them that you haven’t noticed because you stopped looking? What do you love about them that you’ve stopped saying out loud?

Fall in love again with your own life by doing the things that made you feel alive. By pursuing the interests you shelved when life got busy. By spending time with the people who bring out the best version of you. By treating yourself with the care and attention you extend to others but often withhold from yourself.

Fall in love with your work by finding what still matters in it, or by having the honest conversation with yourself about whether it’s time for something new.

Love — in all its forms — is renewable. It is not lost. It is waiting to be chosen again. Choose it today.

Never stop believing

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Never stop believing. Not in yourself, not in the possibility of change, not in the idea that tomorrow can look different from today. The moment you stop believing is the moment the road truly ends.

Belief is the starting point of everything. Before the action comes the conviction that the action is worth taking. Before the achievement comes the faith that achievement is possible. It sounds simple, even obvious — but sustaining that belief through failure, through waiting, through the voices that tell you it’s time to be realistic, is one of the hardest things any person does.

History is full of people who were told to stop believing and didn’t. J.K. Rowling was rejected by twelve publishers before Harry Potter found a home. Abraham Lincoln lost eight elections before becoming president. Walt Disney was told he lacked imagination. Every person who ever built something meaningful had to hold onto their belief in the dark — when there was no evidence yet to justify it.

Believing doesn’t guarantee the outcome you imagined. What it guarantees is that you keep moving — and movement creates possibilities that stillness never could. When you believe in your path, you keep your eyes open for opportunities. You stay curious. You learn from setbacks instead of being crushed by them.

There will be seasons where belief is hard. Where the distance between where you are and where you want to be feels impossible. In those seasons, hold onto the smallest version of your belief. Just the next step. Just today.

Never stop believing. Everything that has ever mattered started with someone who wouldn’t let go of the possibility.

Everyone lives a dream

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Everyone lives a dream — but not always their own. Many people spend their entire lives living out someone else’s vision of what their life should be. The career their parents wanted. The expectations of their culture. The definition of success that their peers held up. And one day, often after it’s already cost them enormously, they realize the dream they’ve been living never belonged to them.

This Life’s Road Sign is one of the most important intersections you can stop at: whose dream are you living? Is the life you’re building genuinely yours — rooted in what you value, what lights you up, what you’d choose if no one was watching — or is it a performance for an audience that may not even be paying attention?

Living your own dream doesn’t mean being selfish or ignoring the people who depend on you. It means that at the foundation of the choices you make, there is an authentic you making them. It means your work connects to something you actually care about. It means you can look at your life and see yourself in it.

Many people are afraid to ask the question because they’re afraid of the answer. But the discomfort of discovering you’ve been living the wrong dream is nothing compared to the cost of spending another decade doing it.

It’s not too late to find your own road. But you have to be willing to ask: is this my dream, or did I just end up here?

Fear No Evil

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Fear no evil. Three small words that carry the weight of a thousand sleepless nights and a thousand darkened roads. They are not a guarantee that evil won’t be present — they are an instruction about how to face it when it is.

Fear has its place. It alerts us to real danger. It sharpens our focus. But chronic fear — the kind that seeps into every corner of daily life and convinces us that catastrophe is always around the next bend — is a kind of prison. It narrows our world down to what we can control and keeps us from walking the roads that matter most.

The command to fear no evil appears in the 23rd Psalm — in the middle of talking about walking through the valley of the shadow of death. Not if you walk through the valley but when. The difficult, shadowed roads are part of the journey. The promise isn’t that you’ll be routed around them. The promise is that you won’t be alone on them.

That is the foundation of fearlessness that actually holds: not the absence of danger, but the presence of something greater than danger. A faith. A community. A purpose powerful enough to make the risk worth taking. The conviction that what waits on the other side of the fear is something you cannot afford to miss.

You will face things that frighten you. Life guarantees that much. But fear is not the last word. Courage is not the absence of fear — it is the decision to keep moving in the presence of it. Walk through the valley. Fear no evil. You were not made to stop here.

Develop your talents

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Develop your talents. Don’t let them sit dormant, waiting for the perfect moment or the right permission or someone to notice them first. The gifts you were given were not meant to stay wrapped.

Everyone has something. A way with words or numbers, a capacity for empathy, a mechanical mind, a gift for music or teaching or building or solving. Many of these capacities went undeveloped because life intervened — practical pressures, limited resources, someone who discouraged rather than encouraged, or simply not knowing that the thing came naturally to you because you assumed it came naturally to everyone.

Here is the thing about talent: raw ability is only the starting point. Every gifted person you admire has something more important than natural aptitude — they have thousands of hours of deliberate practice behind them. The athlete who makes it look effortless has been developing that gift for years. The speaker who holds a room captivated has rehearsed, failed, and refined. Talent without development is potential without realization.

Start developing what you’ve been given. Take a class. Find a mentor. Practice regularly even when no one is watching. Put the work in front of others even when it’s imperfect. Accept feedback and improve. Repeat.

The process will feel slow. Progress in the early stages of developing a skill is often invisible to the person doing the work. But keep going. The compounding nature of skill development means that consistent effort over time creates exponential growth — and one day you’ll look back at how far you’ve come and be surprised by your own progress. Develop your talents. The world needs what you have to offer.

The pain of discipline

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

You will feel one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. One is temporary. The other lasts a lifetime. This is one of the most honest and useful truths on the road of life — and one of the most ignored.

Discipline hurts in the moment. Getting up early hurts. Saying no to something tempting hurts. Doing the hard thing when everything in you wants to take the easy way out hurts. These pains are real. But they are short, they produce results, and over time they become less painful as the habits they build become second nature.

Regret hurts differently. It doesn’t come in the moment of choice — it comes later, sometimes much later. It arrives when you see what you could have built if you’d started earlier. When you realize the relationship could have been saved if you’d worked harder on it. When you understand that the life you wanted was achievable but you didn’t pay the price for it.

This Life’s Road Sign is not about perfectionism or about punishing yourself into productivity. It’s about making an honest comparison between two kinds of pain and choosing wisely. Discipline is an investment. Regret is the cost of not investing.

The most disciplined people aren’t the ones who feel no resistance. They’re the ones who feel it and act anyway. They’ve learned that the pain of doing is always lighter than the pain of wishing they had. Choose your pain wisely. One builds. One breaks.

Will you like what you see?

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Will you like what you see? When you reach the end of this season of your life, when you look back at how you spent your time, your energy, your words — will you be proud of what you find?

This is not a question designed to produce guilt. It’s a compass. It’s the question that, when asked honestly and regularly, keeps you pointed in the direction of the life you actually want to live rather than the one that just happens to you by default.

Most of us have a picture in our minds of the person we want to be. Someone present with the people we love. Someone who works with integrity. Someone who takes care of their health. Someone who keeps their word and lives by their values. The gap between that picture and our daily reality is where most of our quiet dissatisfaction lives.

The encouraging part is that the gap is closeable. Not all at once, and not without effort, but one choice at a time. Every day gives you hundreds of small decisions that either narrow the gap or widen it. The way you respond when you’re stressed. What you choose to prioritize. Whether you do what you said you would do.

Check in with yourself regularly. Not to judge yourself harshly, but to stay honest and course-correct before the drift becomes a canyon. Ask: Am I becoming the person I want to be? Are my daily habits aligned with my deepest values? If I continue on this road, will I like where I end up? The mirror doesn’t lie. Make sure you’ll like what you see.

Who can stand against us?

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

If God is for us, who can stand against us? This question, drawn from the book of Romans, has steadied the hearts of people in impossible circumstances for centuries. It does not promise the absence of opposition. It promises something better: that the opposition does not have the final word.

Life brings adversaries. Sometimes they are external — people who wish you ill, systems that work against you, circumstances that seem determined to undo everything you’re building. Sometimes they are internal — the voice of doubt, the weight of past failure, the fear that whispers you’re not enough and this is too hard.

Against all of these, this truth stands: the Creator of the universe is on your side. Not because you have earned it, not because you have never failed or fallen short, but because love is the nature of God — extravagant, unconditional, and more powerful than any force aligned against you.

This doesn’t mean the road will be easy. It means you do not walk it alone. It means that in your weakness, there is strength available beyond your own. It means that when you have done everything you can and it still isn’t enough, there is something more you can draw on.

When you face opposition today — whatever form it takes — remember this. You are not outmatched. You are not forgotten. You are not without resources. The One who is for you is greater than anything that stands against you. Walk forward in that confidence.

Forgiveness

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Forgiveness is not a gift you give to the person who hurt you. It is a gift you give to yourself — the release of a weight you were never meant to carry this far, for this long.

The unforgiven offense keeps you tethered to the past. You re-experience the hurt every time the memory surfaces. You spend emotional energy on resentment that could have gone elsewhere. The person who wronged you has moved on with their life; you are still carrying the full weight of what they did, and it costs you every day.

Forgiveness does not mean what happened was acceptable. It does not require reconciliation with the person who hurt you — sometimes the wisest and healthiest choice is to maintain firm distance. It does not mean you forget. It means you stop allowing the past event to determine your present experience. You choose to set down the weight, not for their sake, but for your own.

Forgiveness is almost always harder than it sounds. For significant wounds — betrayal, abuse, profound loss caused by someone’s choices — it can be a long, nonlinear process. It may require professional support. It may mean arriving at the decision to forgive multiple times before it actually settles. That’s okay. The direction matters more than the pace.

Think about what you’re holding. Who are you still angry with — from years ago, from decades ago — whose actions are still drawing interest from your emotional accounts? What would it mean to set that down?

Forgiveness is the road that takes you forward. Resentment is the road that keeps looping back to the same place. Choose the forward road.

One day at a time

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

One day at a time. It is one of the oldest pieces of wisdom we have, and one of the most difficult to actually practice — because our minds are built for time travel, constantly revisiting the past or projecting into the future, rarely present in the only moment where life is actually happening.

When the road ahead looks overwhelming — when the challenge is large and the timeline is long and you’re not sure you have what it takes — the only reliable solution is to make it smaller. Not the goal, but the timeframe. Don’t try to cross the whole distance today. Just take today’s step.

The twelve-step tradition understood this profoundly. One day at a time was not a slogan — it was a survival strategy. Recovery feels impossible when you’re looking at forever. It becomes possible when you’re only looking at today. Today, I will make the call. Today, I will show up. The accumulation of enough todays eventually becomes a year, a decade, a transformed life.

The same principle applies to grief, to building a business, to repairing a relationship, to learning a new skill, to healing from an illness. The whole journey might be beyond what you can hold in your mind right now. Today’s portion isn’t.

What does today ask of you? Not the whole plan — just today. What one step, taken today, would move you forward? Take it. Do it well. Then rest, and let tomorrow’s version of you handle tomorrow.

One day at a time is not thinking small. It is how every great thing ever gets done.

Happiness is the way

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Happiness is not a destination you arrive at after achieving the right things. It is a way of traveling. It is available right now, in the midst of whatever circumstances you’re in — not somewhere down the road waiting for you to finally earn it.

We’ve been sold a particular story about happiness: that it lives on the other side of the next milestone. When I get the promotion, I’ll be happy. When I lose the weight, when I find the right person, when the kids leave home, when I retire — then I’ll be happy. And so we spend our lives postponing the very thing we’re working toward, never quite arriving because there’s always another milestone ahead.

The research on happiness consistently surprises people. Major positive life events — getting married, having children, receiving a raise — produce a temporary increase in happiness, but within a year most people return to their baseline. The same is true of negative events. We adapt. We are more resilient and more flexible than we think.

What this means is that sustainable happiness is not a function of circumstances — it is a practice. It grows through gratitude, through presence, through meaningful connection with others, through contribution to something larger than yourself, and through living in alignment with your deepest values.

These things are available to you today, regardless of what your circumstances look like. You don’t have to wait for the perfect conditions. You can choose, right now, to notice what’s good. To connect with someone who matters. To do something that aligns with who you want to be.

Happiness is the way. Travel it intentionally, starting now.
