If you pray stop worrying

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

If you pray stop worrying
If you pray stop worrying

This sign is really about faith. If you pray and believe, then you cannot continue to worry about the thing you prayed for. Praying and believing does not mean expecting God to do everything. Here is a great story that illustrates this point:

A man was trapped in his house during a flood. He began praying to God to rescue him. He had a vision in his head of God’s hand reaching down from heaven and lifting him to safety.

The water started to rise in his house. His neighbor urged him to leave and offered him a ride to safety. The man yelled back, “I am waiting for God to save me”. The neighbor drove off in his pick-up truck.

The man continued to pray and hold on to his vision. As the water began rising in his house, he had to climb up to the roof.

A boat came by with some people heading for safe ground. They yelled at the man to grab a rope they were ready to throw and take him to safety.  He told them that he was waiting for God to save him. They shook their heads and moved on.

The man continued to pray, believing with all his heart that he would be saved by God. The flood waters continued to rise. A helicopter flew by and a voice came over a loudspeaker offering to lower a ladder and take him off the roof.  The man waved the helicopter away, shouting back that he was waiting for God to save him. The helicopter left.

The flooding water came over the roof and caught him up and swept him away. He drowned.

When he reached heaven and asked, “God, Why did you not save me? I believed in you with all my heart. Why did you let me drown?”

God replied, “I sent you a pick-up truck, a boat and a helicopter and you refused it all. What else could I possibly do for you?!”

The extra mile is never crowded

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

The extra mile is never crowded. That’s not an accident — it’s a reflection of how most people approach their work, their relationships, and their potential. Most people stop at good enough. The extra mile belongs to those willing to go further.

Think about the experiences in your life where someone went beyond what was expected. The teacher who stayed after class to make sure you understood. The colleague who delivered more than the assignment required. The friend who showed up with exactly what you needed without being asked. Those moments stand out precisely because they’re rare. Going the extra mile is uncommon — and that is exactly what makes it so valuable.

In your work, the extra mile looks like doing the thing that wasn’t asked of you but would add real value. It looks like responding thoughtfully instead of quickly. It looks like caring about quality even when no one would notice if you cut corners.

In your relationships, the extra mile looks like remembering the details. Following up when someone said they were going through something hard. Celebrating the small wins with as much enthusiasm as the big ones. Giving more grace than the situation technically requires.

The extra mile is rarely glamorous. It is quiet, consistent, unglamorous effort applied to the small moments most people walk past. But those small moments compound. They build reputations. They deepen trust. They create the track record that opens doors.

The road is long. Go the extra mile. You’ll find it’s a much better neighborhood than the one everyone else is crowded into.

Love their mother

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

One of the most powerful things a parent can do for their children is to love the other parent well. Children are always watching, always learning, always forming their understanding of what relationships look like from the model closest to them.

When children see their parents treat each other with respect, affection, and kindness, they learn that love is safe. They learn how conflict can be handled without cruelty. They learn that two people can be genuinely different and still choose each other. They develop a template for their own future relationships that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

This does not mean performing happiness you don’t feel, or staying in situations that are genuinely harmful. It means that within whatever structure your family takes, making a conscious choice to honor the other person who is raising your children — to speak well of them, to support their role, to model basic human decency — is one of the most important investments you can make in your children’s wellbeing.

For couples: don’t let the busyness of life and parenting erode the friendship and connection you built. Invest in each other. Go on dates. Say kind things. Handle disagreements away from little ears whenever possible.

For co-parents who are no longer together: the children still need both of you to show up for them without making them feel caught in the middle. Choose to be cooperative, respectful, and generous — not for your sake, but for theirs. Love their mother. Love their father. It’s one of the best things you’ll ever do for your children.

Make sure you have a plan

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Make sure you have a plan. Not because plans are always followed — they rarely are, exactly — but because the act of planning clarifies your thinking, reveals the gaps, and gives you something to return to when the road gets unclear.

A plan is not a rigid prediction of the future. It is the best thinking you can do right now about how to get from where you are to where you want to go. It will need to be revised. Circumstances will change. Unexpected obstacles will appear. New information will shift your assumptions. A good plan accommodates this — it is a living document, not a contract with the universe.

The person without a plan is entirely at the mercy of circumstances. They react to whatever shows up, drift with whatever current is strongest at the moment, and often look up years later wondering how they ended up where they are. The person with a plan — even an imperfect one — has a frame of reference. When something unexpected happens, they can assess it in relation to their goal.

Write down where you want to go. Break it into steps. Identify the next three actions you need to take. Set a timeline that’s ambitious but realistic. Share the plan with someone who will hold you accountable.

Then hold your plan with the right posture: tight enough to follow it through the inevitable friction, loose enough to let it evolve when reality requires it. Planning without flexibility is rigidity. Flexibility without planning is drift. Make a plan. Then work it — and adapt it as you go.

Don’t Complain

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Don’t complain. Not because your frustrations aren’t real — they may be entirely legitimate — but because complaining, as a default response to difficulty, costs you more than it gains you.

Complaining feels like release. It briefly relieves the internal pressure of frustration by externalizing it. But research suggests that chronic complaining actually reinforces the neural pathways associated with negative thinking, making you more prone to finding fault over time, not less. It is the mental equivalent of a habit that tightens its grip the more you practice it.

Beyond the personal cost, complaining drains the environments it occupies. One consistently negative voice in a team, a family, or a friendship can shift the entire emotional temperature. People who complain habitually often find that others start to avoid them — not because the problems they’re raising aren’t real, but because the complaining doesn’t lead anywhere and the energy is exhausting.

The alternative is not forced positivity. It is directing the energy that goes into complaining into something more useful: identifying what can actually be changed and changing it, accepting what can’t be changed and letting it go, or communicating a legitimate concern to someone who can actually address it.

Ask yourself before you voice a complaint: Is this useful? Is it actionable? Is it being said to someone who can do something about it, or am I just venting? The answer determines whether you’re engaging in problem-solving or in a habit that slowly makes everything worse. Don’t complain. Change what you can, accept what you can’t, and put your energy where it can make a difference.

Success is going longer

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Success is going longer. Longer than you planned. Longer than others go. Longer than feels comfortable or reasonable or even sane. Most people quit when success is closer than they realize — and the ones who break through are simply the ones who didn’t stop.

The timeline on meaningful goals is almost always longer than we want it to be. We set ambitious targets with optimistic deadlines, and when the deadline passes and we’re not where we expected to be, we start to question whether the goal was ever realistic. But those questions arrive at the exact moment when patience and persistence are needed most.

Think of it like planting seeds. You don’t plant a tree and dig it up every day to check if the roots are growing. You plant it, tend it consistently, and trust the process. The growth is happening underground long before you can see it above the surface. Quit before the roots take hold, and you’ll never see what the tree could have become.

The path to mastery in any field is the same. The first years are often slow, the feedback is sparse, and it’s easy to feel like you’re going nowhere. But the skills and relationships and experience accumulating beneath the surface are building something that will eventually break through in ways you can’t yet predict.

Go longer. Put in the extra hour. Persist through the season when results aren’t visible. Stay committed when the path is unclear. Success is waiting on the other side of the giving-up point. Just go a little longer.

Success and Failure

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Success is not an accident. It looks like luck from the outside — the right opportunity, the right timing, the right break. But behind every overnight success is a story of preparation, persistence, and countless unseen hours of work that created the conditions for the lucky moment to land.

Seneca put it simply: luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. The opportunity is beyond our control. The preparation is entirely within it. And the person who has been consistently preparing — developing their skills, expanding their knowledge, building relationships, staying ready — is the one who recognizes the opportunity when it arrives and has the capacity to act on it.

Success leaves clues. The most successful people in any field share identifiable patterns: they are curious and relentless learners. They do the work that others avoid. They maintain their commitments when motivation fades. They recover from setbacks rather than being defined by them. They invest in relationships and treat people with genuine respect. None of these are accidental habits.

If you want different results, look at your daily behaviors. Success in health, in relationships, in career, in finances — all of it is built through the accumulation of daily decisions. What you do today is practice for tomorrow. What you practice consistently becomes what you’re capable of.

Don’t wait for luck. Build the preparation that makes luck useful when it comes. Do the work, develop the skills, stay ready. Success is not an accident. It is the predictable result of deliberate effort applied consistently over time.

Caution – Fear and Doubt Ahead

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Caution: fear and doubt ahead. Consider this a heads-up, not a stop sign. The road toward anything meaningful passes through territory where fear and doubt are permanent residents. Knowing they’re coming can make all the difference.

Fear and doubt are not signs that you’re on the wrong road. They’re often signs that you’re on the right one — that you’re attempting something that matters, something that stretches you, something with real stakes. The absence of fear and doubt tends to indicate you’re staying well within the boundaries of what’s already proven safe.

Fear says this might not work out. Doubt says maybe I’m not enough for this. Both are voices, not verdicts. They carry the weight of possibility, not certainty. The question is not whether you’ll hear them — you will — but how you’ll respond when you do.

Acknowledge fear when it shows up. Name it. I’m afraid this will fail. I’m doubting whether I have what it takes. Naming what you feel removes some of its power. You are no longer controlled by a nameless dread — you’re dealing with a specific concern that can be examined and addressed.

Then ask: Is this fear showing me a real danger I should prepare for, or is it the predictable anxiety of doing something new? Often it’s the latter. Often the very presence of fear signals that you’re at the edge of your growth — and that’s exactly where you want to be.

Proceed with caution — and proceed. Fear and doubt are fellow travelers, not roadblocks. You can move forward even with them in the car.

No Fear

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

No fear. It sounds like a slogan — simple, bold. But as a life principle, it points toward something genuinely transformative: the decision to refuse to let fear determine the direction of your life.

Fear is universal. There is no person alive who does not feel it. The goal is not to become fearless in the sense of never feeling afraid — that would require either numbness or disconnection from reality. The goal is to become someone whose fear does not have the final word.

Think of the things you haven’t done because of fear. The conversation you’ve been avoiding. The opportunity you talked yourself out of. The risk you didn’t take because you couldn’t stop imagining what might go wrong. Fear cost you those things — quietly, without drama, simply by making inaction feel like the safer option.

No fear doesn’t mean no caution. It means calibrating your response to risk honestly. It means asking: Is this fear protecting me from genuine harm, or is it protecting my ego, my comfort zone, my fear of being wrong? Most of the fear we carry belongs to the second category. And that fear deserves to be challenged.

The practice of no fear is the practice of taking the action despite the fear. You do the presentation with shaking hands. You have the conversation with your heart pounding. You try the thing you might fail at. And every time you do, the fear gets smaller and your confidence gets larger.

No fear. Not because there’s nothing to be afraid of, but because you are bigger than what you’re afraid of.

Plan and Prepare

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Plan and prepare — because when the moment arrives, there won’t be time to start. The readiness you build in the quiet seasons is what carries you through the demanding ones.

There is a saying in many fields: the more you sweat in practice, the less you bleed in battle. Athletes drill the same plays thousands of times so that when the game is on the line, the body moves without having to think. Surgeons simulate procedures before performing them on patients. Pilots train in flight simulators until emergency responses become instinct. This is not overkill — it is wisdom.

Preparation is not the same as overthinking. Overthinking delays action; preparation enables it. Preparation means doing the work now so that when opportunity or crisis appears, you’re not scrambling — you’re ready to move.

Planning without action is just dreaming. But action without planning is often wasted energy — the wrong thing done efficiently, or the right thing done in the wrong sequence. The plan doesn’t need to be perfect. It needs to be honest, clear enough to follow, and flexible enough to revise when the situation demands it.

What are you preparing for? What season is coming — personally, professionally, in your health or your finances — that deserves your attention now, before it arrives? The time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining, not when the rain is coming through.

Plan. Prepare. Then act with the confidence that comes from having done both. The road is navigable when you’ve done the work before you stepped onto it.

TODAY I WILL DO WHAT OTHER WON’T

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Today I will do what others won’t — so that tomorrow I can do what others can’t. That sentence alone contains the entire blueprint for an exceptional life.

Most people choose comfort. They hit snooze. They scroll instead of study. They say they’ll start Monday and then find another reason to delay. This is human nature. Our brains are wired for short-term ease. But exceptional outcomes don’t come from doing what’s easy. They come from doing what’s necessary even when it’s hard.

Think about every person you admire — every athlete, entrepreneur, artist, or leader whose life inspires you. What separates them from everyone else? They consistently did the thing others avoided. They trained when they were tired. They practiced when no one was watching. They kept going when quitting would have been completely understandable.

The gap between ordinary and extraordinary is not talent. It is not luck. It is not connections or timing. The gap is the daily willingness to do what others won’t. To wake up and choose discipline over comfort, one day at a time.

Today you have a choice. You can take the easy road — the one most people take. Or you can do the thing that’s hard, the thing that requires sacrifice, the thing that feels uncomfortable right now but builds the life you actually want.

The road less traveled is less traveled for a reason. It’s harder. But at the end of it, there is a version of yourself and a life you could never have reached by taking the easy way out. Today, do what others won’t.

Questions

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Questions are the road signs of a well-lived life. They point you toward what matters, away from what doesn’t, and remind you that you still have somewhere to go.

The quality of your life is largely determined by the quality of the questions you ask yourself. People who ask why does this always happen to me lead very different lives from those who ask what can I learn from this. Not because their circumstances are different, but because the questions they ask direct their attention — and attention shapes experience.

Ask better questions. Instead of why can’t I do this, ask what would it look like if I could. Instead of what’s wrong with me, ask what do I need right now. Instead of why aren’t things working, ask what’s one thing I could adjust.

Questions also build connection. When you approach other people with genuine curiosity — asking about their experiences, their perspectives, their stories — you learn things you never could have imagined. You discover that your assumptions were wrong, that the world is wider than your own experience of it.

The greatest thinkers in history were, above all, excellent questioners. Socrates built an entire method of inquiry around asking and following questions wherever they led. Scientists spend careers pursuing a single question. Children — before we train it out of them — ask why dozens of times a day.

Keep asking. Keep wondering. Keep following the questions you can’t stop thinking about. They are signs pointing you toward exactly where you need to go.

Everyone lives a dream

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Everyone lives a dream — but not always their own. Many people spend their entire lives living out someone else’s vision of what their life should be. The career their parents wanted. The expectations of their culture. The definition of success that their peers held up. And one day, often after it’s already cost them enormously, they realize the dream they’ve been living never belonged to them.

This Life’s Road Sign is one of the most important intersections you can stop at: whose dream are you living? Is the life you’re building genuinely yours — rooted in what you value, what lights you up, what you’d choose if no one was watching — or is it a performance for an audience that may not even be paying attention?

Living your own dream doesn’t mean being selfish or ignoring the people who depend on you. It means that at the foundation of the choices you make, there is an authentic you making them. It means your work connects to something you actually care about. It means you can look at your life and see yourself in it.

Many people are afraid to ask the question because they’re afraid of the answer. But the discomfort of discovering you’ve been living the wrong dream is nothing compared to the cost of spending another decade doing it.

It’s not too late to find your own road. But you have to be willing to ask: is this my dream, or did I just end up here?

Tomorrow never comes

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Tomorrow never comes — not as a day to actually live in, only as a place we send the things we don’t want to deal with today. And so the important conversation keeps not getting had, the creative project keeps not getting started, the relationship keeps not getting the attention it needs. Tomorrow, tomorrow, always tomorrow.

The cruelty of procrastination is that it feels like relief. Putting something off removes the immediate discomfort of doing it. The brain registers a small reward. And so the habit reinforces itself, one delay at a time, until years have passed and you’re still waiting for the tomorrow that was going to change everything.

But today is the only day you actually have. Not philosophically — practically. The present moment is the only location in time where action is possible. Yesterday is over. Tomorrow doesn’t exist yet. Everything you’ll ever actually do, you do today.

When you find yourself saying tomorrow, ask honestly: What is the real cost of that delay? Is there something I’m afraid of? Is the discomfort of starting worth more to me than the result of having done it? Often, the answer reveals that today is exactly the right time.

The things that matter most cannot afford to wait. The people you love, the dreams worth chasing, the words you’ve been meaning to say — all of these have a shelf life. Tomorrow is not a guarantee for any of us. Do it today. Tomorrow never comes, but today always does.

Waiting on a sign

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

You’ve been waiting for a sign. Maybe this is it.

We wait for signs because we want certainty before we act. We want confirmation that the path is right, that the timing is good, that the risk is worth it. And signs can come — in the form of a conversation at the right moment, a book that opens to exactly the right page, an opportunity that appears after a long drought. Signs are real, and paying attention to them is wisdom.

But waiting for a sign can also become a way of avoiding the decision you already know you need to make. You know what the sign would say — you know what you need to do. You’re just hoping for external permission to do what you already feel called toward, because acting without certainty is frightening.

Consider this: action itself often produces the sign you’re waiting for. You take the step and doors open, or close definitively, or redirect you somewhere better. Clarity often comes through doing rather than through waiting.

What are you waiting on a sign about? Is there something you already know in your gut — a change that needs to happen, a conversation that needs to occur, a dream that needs your active investment rather than just your wishful attention?

Sometimes the sign you’re looking for is the persistent feeling inside you that won’t go away. The recurring thought. The quiet knowing that something needs to change. You’ve been waiting on a sign. Consider yourself signposted. Now go.

Born to be you.

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

You were born to be you — not a copy, not a compromise, not a carefully curated version of what other people expect. The world already has plenty of imitations. What it needs is the original.

From the earliest age, many of us receive subtle and not-so-subtle messages that tell us to be different. Be quieter, be louder, be smarter, be more like your sibling, be more like your classmates. Over time, we start to suppress the things that make us unique, and we begin building a persona designed for approval rather than authenticity.

But here is the truth: the qualities that make you different are not flaws. They are features. The sensitivity that others told you to hide is what makes you perceptive and compassionate. The boldness that got you in trouble is what will drive you forward. The creative mind that doesn’t fit neatly into boxes is exactly what the world needs more of.

Being yourself takes courage. It means risking judgment, rejection, or misunderstanding. But the cost of not being yourself is far greater — a life spent performing for others, never feeling fully at home in your own skin.

You were not put on this earth to meet someone else’s definition of who you should be. You were put here with a specific set of gifts, perspectives, and passions that are entirely your own. When you live fully as yourself, those gifts can emerge and make a difference — in your life and in the lives of everyone around you. Stop trying to be someone else. You were born to be you.

Tell the truth

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Tell the truth. It sounds simple, but it is one of the most courageous and countercultural acts available to a human being in a world that constantly provides incentives for half-truths, omissions, and comfortable distortions.

We lie for understandable reasons. We want to avoid conflict. We want to protect someone’s feelings. We want to protect our own reputation or position. We tell ourselves that the small untruth doesn’t really matter, that no one will know, that it’s kinder than the alternative. And sometimes, short-term, it is more comfortable.

But dishonesty has a long-term cost that is always more expensive than the short-term discomfort of the truth. Trust, once broken, is very hard to rebuild. The energy spent maintaining a lie — keeping the stories straight, avoiding the topics that might expose it — is exhausting. And the relationship built on falseness is fundamentally hollow, no matter how pleasant the surface appears.

The truth, by contrast, is clean. Even when it’s hard to deliver and hard to receive, it respects the other person enough to give them reality to work with. It gives relationships the honest foundation they need to be genuinely deep. It lets you live without the weight of constructed narratives and the anxiety of being found out.

Tell the truth about yourself — your mistakes, your struggles, your uncertainties. Tell the truth to the people you love, even when it’s uncomfortable. Tell the truth in your work, especially when covering it up would be easier.

The road you build on honesty is longer and harder to start on, but it leads somewhere real. Truth is how you actually get there.

Today is the day!

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Today is the day. Not tomorrow. Not Monday. Not when things are less busy, less complicated, or less scary. Today.

We are remarkably good at finding reasons to wait. The timing isn’t right. We’re not ready yet. We need more information, more preparation, more courage. And so we wait, and the days keep passing, and the thing we want to do or become or build stays perpetually on the horizon — always close, never quite arrived.

Here is what nobody tells you about waiting for the right time: the right time is a myth. There will always be a reason to delay. Life will never be perfectly organized, perfectly calm, or perfectly positioned for the thing you want to begin. The people who take action don’t do it because the conditions were perfect — they do it despite the conditions, and they figure things out as they go.

What have you been putting off? What is the thing that keeps showing up in your mind — the business you want to start, the conversation you need to have, the health goal you keep pushing back, the creative project that’s been waiting years for your attention?

Today is the day to take the first step toward it. Not the whole journey — just the first step. Send the email. Make the appointment. Write the first paragraph. Lace up your shoes and walk out the door. Begin. Every meaningful journey began on a day exactly like today. Ordinary. Uncertain. And someone chose to begin anyway.

Stop Domestic Violence

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Stop domestic violence. Stop tolerating it, stop minimizing it, stop explaining it away — and if you’re experiencing it, stop believing it is your fault or your destiny.

Domestic violence is not just physical. It includes emotional abuse, financial control, isolation, intimidation, and coercion. It happens in every socioeconomic group, every culture, every religion, every kind of relationship. It is about power and control, not love — though it is often confused with love by those caught inside it.

The patterns of abuse are well documented. They typically include a cycle of tension, escalation, incident, and reconciliation — where the abusive partner minimizes what happened, promises change, and shows genuine remorse, before the cycle begins again. Over time, the incidents often become more severe, and the victim can become more isolated, more doubting of their own perceptions, and more afraid to leave.

If you are in an abusive relationship, please know this: you deserve safety. You deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. The relationship you are in is not your fault. Leaving is complicated and can be dangerous, so please reach out for help from someone you trust or contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or text START to 88788.

If you know someone you believe may be experiencing domestic violence, don’t wait for them to ask for help. Let them know you see them, you believe them, and you’re there when they’re ready. Don’t push — the path out of an abusive relationship is complex. Just make sure they know they are not alone.

Domestic violence ends when communities refuse to stay silent. Use your voice.

No shortcuts!

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going. That’s not a warning — it’s a promise. The path that takes longer, demands more, and requires real sacrifice is the one that actually gets you somewhere meaningful.

We live in a culture obsessed with shortcuts. Quick fixes. Overnight success stories. Life hacks that promise results without effort. And it’s seductive, because nobody likes doing hard things. Nobody enjoys the grind of consistent effort when the destination feels distant.

But shortcuts have a hidden cost. When you cut corners, you bypass the very experiences that build your character, your skills, and your resilience. The athlete who dopes may win the race, but they never develop the inner strength that comes from honest training. The student who cheats on the exam may pass the class, but they don’t carry the knowledge forward. The shortcut gets you the appearance of the destination — without what you needed to gain along the way.

Every meaningful thing in life is built through process. Strong relationships require years of showing up. Mastery requires thousands of hours of practice. A healthy body requires consistent effort over months and years. A business worth building requires patience, failure, iteration, and more patience.

The good news is that there is a great equalizer in all of this: time and effort are available to everyone. You don’t need special talent or luck to do the work. You just need to decide that the destination is worth the journey — and then take the next step, and the next, and the one after that.

No shortcuts. Just forward movement, one honest day at a time.
