Forgiveness

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Forgiveness is not a gift you give to the person who hurt you. It is a gift you give to yourself — the release of a weight you were never meant to carry this far, for this long.

The unforgiven offense keeps you tethered to the past. You re-experience the hurt every time the memory surfaces. You spend emotional energy on resentment that could have gone elsewhere. The person who wronged you has moved on with their life; you are still carrying the full weight of what they did, and it costs you every day.

Forgiveness does not mean what happened was acceptable. It does not require reconciliation with the person who hurt you — sometimes the wisest and healthiest choice is to maintain firm distance. It does not mean you forget. It means you stop allowing the past event to determine your present experience. You choose to set down the weight, not for their sake, but for your own.

Forgiveness is almost always harder than it sounds. For significant wounds — betrayal, abuse, profound loss caused by someone’s choices — it can be a long, nonlinear process. It may require professional support. It may mean arriving at the decision to forgive multiple times before it actually settles. That’s okay. The direction matters more than the pace.

Think about what you’re holding. Who are you still angry with — from years ago, from decades ago — whose actions are still drawing interest from your emotional accounts? What would it mean to set that down?

Forgiveness is the road that takes you forward. Resentment is the road that keeps looping back to the same place. Choose the forward road.
