Not all who wander are lost

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Not all who wander are lost. J.R.R. Tolkien gave us this line, and Life’s Road Signs has claimed it — because it speaks to something real about the unconventional journey and the person who refuses to travel someone else’s pre-approved route.

The world tends to be suspicious of wanderers. We have timelines and checklists for life, and anyone who isn’t following them is often assumed to be lost, directionless, or squandering their potential. Graduate at this age. Get the job by that age. Settle down by this one. Have children by that one. The pressure to follow the prescribed path is enormous.

But some of the most purposeful, interesting, and ultimately fulfilled people have taken roads that looked, from the outside, like wandering. They tried things. They changed direction. They followed curiosity instead of convention. They spent time in the in-between — between identities, between chapters, between who they were and who they were becoming.

Wandering, done with intention, is a form of exploration. It’s how you discover what you actually want rather than what you were told to want. It’s how you develop the kind of self-knowledge that a straight, narrow, prescribed path rarely offers.

If your road looks less like a highway and more like a series of interesting turns — that’s okay. If you don’t know exactly where you’re going, but you’re going with curiosity and courage — that’s not being lost. That’s being alive in the fullest sense.

Not all who wander are lost. Some are just finding their own road.
