Stop Bullying

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Every child deserves to feel safe — at school, online, in their own neighborhood. Bullying makes safety feel impossible, and that is something no child should have to accept as normal.

Bullying takes many forms. It is the physical intimidation in the hallway, the social exclusion engineered to make someone feel invisible, the relentless cruelty of online comments that follow a child home and into their bedroom at night. The digital age has removed the last safe refuge — home — from children who are targeted, and the impact is profound.

Research shows that both those who are bullied and those who do the bullying are at elevated risk for mental health challenges. The child who bullies is often masking their own pain, insecurity, or difficult home circumstances. Addressing bullying effectively means reaching both sides of the dynamic with compassion and accountability.

Communities that successfully reduce bullying share common features. There are clear expectations and consistent consequences. Adults model respectful behavior. Bystanders are empowered to speak up rather than stay silent. Those who are targeted have accessible, trusted adults they can report to without fear of retaliation or dismissal.

Parents play a critical role. Watch for signs that your child may be struggling — withdrawal, reluctance to go to school, changes in mood or appetite. Ask open questions. Make space for them to tell you the truth without fear of an overreaction that would make things harder for them.

Bullying is not inevitable. It is a choice — and it can be stopped when enough people choose not to tolerate it.

Stop!

January 27, 2023 by Signmaker

Stop. Just for a moment — stop. We move through life at a pace that rarely allows for the kind of pause that changes everything. We are busy, connected, scheduled, and rushing from one thing to the next. And in all that motion, we miss things. We miss the moment right in front of us. We miss the signals our own body is sending. We miss the people who are right beside us, waiting for us to slow down enough to see them.

Stopping is not quitting. It is not laziness. It is one of the most courageous things a person can do in a world that glorifies perpetual motion. To stop is to say: I will not be controlled by the urgent at the expense of the important. I will not spend my whole life rushing toward destinations without actually living the road.

When you stop, you create space to breathe. Space to think more clearly than you can when your brain is in constant overdrive. Space to hear the quieter voice inside you that has wisdom to offer if you’ll only get still enough to receive it.

Stop and notice what’s beautiful. Stop and check in with the people you love. Stop and ask yourself if the direction you’re heading is actually where you want to go. Stop and acknowledge what you’ve already accomplished before sprinting toward the next thing.

The world will not fall apart if you pause. In fact, after a genuine stop, everything that comes next often goes better — because you were fully present for it. Stop. Breathe. Then go on — more intentionally than before.

Stop Bullying

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

Stop bullying. It is not a rite of passage. It is not harmless teasing that builds character. It is the deliberate use of power to harm another person — and it leaves marks that last far longer than anyone watching from the outside would ever guess.

The person being bullied carries the experience long after the moment has passed. It shapes how they see themselves, how safe they feel in social spaces, how much they trust that they belong. The research is clear: sustained bullying is associated with lasting effects on mental health, self-esteem, academic performance, and social development. These are not small things. These are the building blocks of a person’s life.

Every school, every team, every community has a choice about the culture it creates. Bullying does not thrive in environments where adults take it seriously, where bystanders are empowered to speak up, and where kindness is explicitly valued rather than privately expected but publicly ignored. It thrives where silence is mistaken for neutrality.

If you are witnessing bullying and saying nothing, your silence is being read as permission. It doesn’t have to be dramatic intervention — a quiet word to the person being targeted afterward, a report to an adult in authority, a simple “that’s not cool” in the moment — these small acts can be more significant than you know.

If you are being bullied: you deserve to feel safe, and what is happening to you is not a reflection of your worth. Tell someone. Tell someone else if the first person doesn’t respond. Keep talking until someone listens.

Stop bullying. The road belongs to everyone.
