What do you think of yourself?

January 26, 2023 by Signmaker

What do you think of yourself? Not what others think of you — what do you actually believe about who you are, what you’re capable of, and what you deserve?

Your self-concept is one of the most powerful forces in your life. It operates like a thermostat — it tends to pull you back to whatever temperature you’ve set for yourself. Set it low, and you’ll unconsciously sabotage anything that exceeds it. Set it high, and you’ll find ways to rise to meet the level you believe you belong at.

Most of us formed our core self-beliefs very early in life, often from experiences and messages we never consciously examined as adults. A teacher who said you weren’t smart. A parent who compared you unfavorably to a sibling. A failure that you made mean something permanent about who you are. These old messages shape our behavior decades later — often without us realizing it.

It’s worth stopping to honestly audit what you believe about yourself. Not what you tell people, but what you quietly assume when you’re alone. Do you believe you’re fundamentally worthy of love? Do you believe you’re capable of significant achievement? Do you believe people generally like you, or are you always waiting to be found out as inadequate?

The good news is that self-concept is not fixed. It changes through new experiences, through intentional repetition of more empowering beliefs, and through the brave choice to act beyond what your current self-image says is possible for you.

Think better of yourself. Not in a delusional way — in a truthful one. You are more capable, more worthy, and more significant than the old stories are telling you.
